The season of holidays is fast approaching. Halloween is almost around the corner. Then, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year festivities are not far behind. People generally throw parties according to family tradition. Some may have a potluck, buffet affair. The guests bring their personal favorites, and everyone shares a conglomeration of yummy dishes. Others have more formal gatherings and pull out the best china. But, costume parties are a good choice, when it comes to indulging in a little fantasy or throwing a theme masquerade.

For example, consider the fun of throwing a party with a theme of another country. For instance, what do most people imagine, when asked how they envision a party in Asia? I am fairly certain a Geisha girl would come to mind. Kimonos are absolutely gorgeous. Although I do not understand how these beautiful ladies accomplish the task, but a chopsticks adorned hairstyle is definitely intriguing.

Another great idea is period costumes. For example, what is one of the most colorful and unique periods in recent American history? Think Woodstock. Of course, most people will think of hippies and free love in the sixties. Even for the next generation can enjoy a conversation about going retro. The wild attire and Go-Go boots are great. Most cannot fathom parents being kids during that time.

Alternatively, a blast to the distant past may be a different theme to explore. Although it is hard to imagine, the Renaissance really did occur, and a time did exist when citizens are basically poor or rich, nobility or peasant. But, even though the times are probably something not to be seriously revisited, the attire is definitely interesting and fun.

Sometimes, great themes for costume parties are influenced by real life. For example, many people have a loved one who is, has, or will be serving in the military. Stickers and banners are everywhere, encouraging the communities to keep these loyal Americans in thought and prayer. So, why not throw a support our troops party. Pick any branch of the service, and it is easy to find a great selection of costumes. In fact, camouflage costumes always available to support all servicepersons.

So, enjoy the holidays. Plan a party of two. Establish a theme, and go to a party in style, decked out in a great costume from a different time or place, or in support of those who have no time to party. You do not have to be a good crafter to be able to make many great Halloween crafts that will make your holiday joyful. Halloween evokes pictures of spooky ghosts, black cats, dark witches, and flying bats.

You can recreate some of these images with fun and easy crafts.

The greatest part about creating Halloween crafts is that the whole family can make them and it it allows you to spend some time together. Lots of Halloween crafts can be done by almost any age child. For instance, your toddler can help out and learn new skills like cutting, drawing, and coloring.

Of course, you need a few crafting supplies from the store. Here is the basic craft equipment needed:

• Various craft paintings: black, white, orange, etc. (pots and spraying cans)
• Gold and silver paint (spraying cans)
• Colored pipe cleaners
• Black, white, silver and gold markers

Obviously, most households already have average craft supplies like scissors, tape and glue.

So, let's begin: it is going to be fun!

Spiders

To make these spiders, you need an egg carton.

Cut all the egg cups.

Paint them black.

Paint their eyes with white or orange paint.

Make four small holes on each side of the spiders.

Insert a black or colored pipe cleaner in each hole and stick or glue them to the spider.

Find as many small pumpkin plastic containers as you want.

Colored Pumpkins

Here is a very special idea that will allow you to recycle your Halloween ornaments while saving a lot of money. You probably already have ceramic pumpkins. Instead of buying new Halloween decorations, paint your old ones according to your needs: gold or silver paint for a luxurious decoration, for example.

You may also want to paint them in black or white. With a black, white, silver or gold marker, draw some shapes on these new pumpkins such as black cat, white witch, black mansion...

Kids love bright colors so you can paint your pumpkins in several different bright colors such as orange, green, blue, red, yellow, etc. Draw Halloween figures on these pumpkins. For teenagers ornament, paint pumpkins with metallic colors, glow-in-the-dark, glitter, etc.

Pumpkin Jar

If you already have one or more, fill a glass jar with small plastic or ceramic pumpkins; alternate pumpkins with maple berries and leaves.

Homemade Halloween Illuminations

Here is an almost free Halloween craft! Paint small jars in black, white and orange. Draw some Halloween shapes on them and insert a tea light candle in each jar. For instance, paint a white jar, draw Scream murderer's eyes and mouth and voila, you have a very special ghost light. Place the Halloween candles on a black tray, insert mini pumpkins, maple berries and leaves, etc.

If you have bigger jars, you may paint them as well and pour in Christmas lights.

Paint candelabra with black paint.

Add orange wax lights.

Hang cobwebs on the candelabra for a spooky Halloween effect!

Halloween Centrepiece

You will need to use a bread basket in order to make this item.

Fill it with some maple leaves.

Add cobweb, mini pumpkins, spiders...

You may keep the basket for Thanksgiving: you will only have to replace cobweb and spiders by grapes and pine cones.

Halloween Tree

Put bare branches in a vase.

Paint small Christmas tree balls black, white, and orange.

Draw Halloween figures on them.

Hang the balls on the branches.

You may also make your own Halloween tree decorations such as ghosts, black cat, witches, and spiders cut out cardboard. Paint them and hang them on the tree.

Tip: create a great Halloween garland with popcorn painted orange.

Witch Hat

If you still have a pointy black hat from last year, reuse it by sticking Halloween items such as fake hands, spiders, cobwebs or other spooky items and pin it to the front door.

I have attempted in this article to discuss some safety tips for trick or treat, ways to insure our little ones stay out of harms way for Halloween. Are you uncertain how to make this holiday a safe one for your children?

October 31, All Hallows Eve, only comes around once a year. Tis the season for ghosts, goblins, witches, pretty little princesses, superman and the joker, all different types of disguised little ones, to make their appearance on our doorsteps asking for treats so we won't be tricked. Are you prepared for the invasion of the little people?

Halloween night, just before dusk, you will begin to see the sidewalks and roads change mystically into a land of witches, ghosts and goblins. Trick or treat! It is here again and as a parent you must make certain your children remain safe and unharmed during their various festivities.

Choosing the costume with safety foremost in our minds is an important point to consider. The costume should be loose fitting or non-binding so as not to trip up their feet on their journey. Avoid long skirts or outfits, heels that are too high, or boots that are too large and could cause a child to fall.

Choose the mask carefully - be sure that it does not obstruct their vision as they make their merry way up and down the sidewalks. Comfort on their face is also an issue to be concerned about, making sure they can breathe through the disguise. Should you choose make-up as an alternative to a face mask, be aware of any caution labels on the package. Use only non-toxic, hypoallergenic products and ones that can be removed with soap and water.

Although many parents attempt to take their little ones out before dark, there are many that are still trick or treating after dark. Use reflective material in their costume or apply a reflective tape to their attire so they are visible on their outing. Another safety tip for trick or treat is to have your child carry a flashlight.

The best part of Halloween, especially for the kids, is the treats they are given. Teach the children not to snack on these treats until such time you have had a chance to examine them for tampering. Be on the look out for packages that have been torn or altered in any form. Check them carefully for pin holes in the wrapper and unless you know for sure exactly where they came from, avoid altogether any home made treat that has not been wrapped in a clear plastic wrap.

Of the many Halloween safety tips for trick or treat I could give you, the most important one is to accompany your children as they go about the neighborhood. Do not allow them to go alone - besides the safety issue - it gives you the opportunity to share this holiday with them, no matter their age. Hundreds of children and mothers participated, with fresh carnations supplied by Anna in remembrance of her mother. By 1911 Mother's Day had caught on across much of the nation and mother's were finally getting the public recognition Anna felt they deserved.

On May 8, 1914, the U.S. Congress passed a joint resolution establishing the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. President Woodrow Wilson issued the proclamation making it the official U.S. holiday we know today. This year marks the holiday's Centennial. "Anna's efforts are a prime example of what women can accomplish with determination and dedication," said Gayle Manchin, West Virginia's 2001 Mother of the Year. "As we celebrate the centennial anniversary of Mother's Day this year, we remember the women in our lives who have nurtured and provided us guidance on a daily basis."

A lot has changed for mothers since that first Mother's Day in Grafton one hundred years ago. The challenges of motherhood have multiplied. With more dual-income famiies and single-parent families, today's moms aren't just moms anymore. Many are soldiers, doctors, civic leaders, and business people, juggling the daily demands of both work and home. And, all of them face the daunting task of raising a family in an increasingly complex world. Yet, they remain the glue that holds so many families together. Maybe that's why, amid the all the changes over the past 100 years, Mother's Day remains one of the most cherished of U.S. holidays.

The year-end holidays are often a time of frenzy and frustration, instead of fun, for many people. Getting organized and planning ahead will help add to the fun, rather than to the frenzy.

Here's how:

1. Early Bird. As the old clich goes, the early bird always gets the worm, and nothing is more true than when celebrating the year-end holidays. Begin making a TO DO list in October. Crossing things off your list will give you a sense of accomplishment and control. Put your list in a three-ring binder, and store all your related holiday papers in clear sheet protectors along with your TO DO list.

2. Gifts Galore. Make a holiday gift list early in the year, in order to take advantage of sales, by shopping for gifts throughout the entire year rather than at the last minute. Wrap purchases immediately and put name tags on them to avoid last minute hassles.

3. Wrap it Up. I know, I know. It can be rather annoying to see Christmas displays in the stores now as early as September. But instead of being annoyed, go ahead and buy your wrapping paper, bows, ribbons, tags etc. early and store them so that you have everything at your fingertips come wrapping time.

4. Bake-a-Thon. Why not put some holiday music on in October, wear a fun holiday sweatshirt, and set aside a whole day to do your cookie baking? Cookies freeze well, so you can do this ahead of time.

5. Card Shark. Purchase holiday cards that have your printed signature on them so you don't have to sign each one individually, and also be sure to order matching return address labels. Do this in October and have your children put the stamps and address labels on the cards for you, making it a fun family affair. Use a red or green pen to address the envelopes.

6. Letter Love. If you love writing your annual Christmas letter on your computer, you can make it easier by keeping a list on your computer, month by month, of your family's happenings throughout the year. When the time comes to actually write the letter, you'll have an instant picture of your year's events, making it much easier to write the actual letter.

7. Easy E-mail. If you'd prefer to send your Christmas letter via email, use a holiday template from Constant Contact or another program to easily write and send your holiday letter to a large e-mail database.

8. Postage With the Mostage. Be sure to have all your out of town packages and holiday cards ready to be mailed by December 1 to avoid the stress of standing in line at the post office on December 24.

9. Tree Trimmings. When making your TO DO list in October, set aside a specific day to put up your holiday tree and decorations. Do nothing else that day, and serve hot cocoa and popcorn as treats while you're trimming the tree.

10. Gracious Guests. If you will be entertaining guests for the holidays, plan and call ahead to hire any cleaning and/or catering services. If you'll be cooking the meals yourself, be sure to prepare a menu and shopping list.

With a little advance planning, you too can have a fun and festive, rather than a frenzied and frantic holiday season this year!
