Do you remember the excitement and anticipation that came with every Valentines Day when we were kids? It became almost a competition to see which kid in your classroom managed to garner the most of the flimsy punch-out Valentines cards with their even flimsier envelopes. In spite of the enthusiasm for the cards portraying the cultural icons of that particular year, the biggest attraction of the day was getting Conversation Hearts, the more the merrier. Thats what Valentines Day was and still is for most kids.

The idea of Conversation Hearts has been around since the late 1800s. The first conversations candies were not in the shape of a heart but rather shaped as sea shells. The text was printed on a foil wrapper and not on the actual candy.

The first Motto Candy was invented in 1900 but it still was not heart-shaped. For some strange reason, perhaps to allow for longer imprinted sayings, these Sweet Heart candies were in the shape of baseballs, horseshoes, postcards, and watches. With the passage of time, the sayings got shorter and shorter and were reduced to one or two lines of sentiment which fit perfectly on a heart-shaped candy.

In 1900, four candy companies merged together to become the New England Confectionary Company or NECCO. The candy companies NECCO, Brachs, and Jelly Belly are the three primary manufacturers of the Conversation Hearts in the early 21st century. No matter who makes this Valentine treat, about 8 billion hearts are produced each year. Even though the peak selling season is a mere 6 weeks, the confectionary companies produce the hearts for 11 months of the year. Gee, I wonder what kind of preservative is used to give them such a long shelf life. Maybe I dont want to know.

Conversation Hearts are made by man and machine working together. There are 7 major steps in creating these candies:

• Step 1 - Combine sugar, corn syrup, cornstarch, flavors, gums, and colors into the mixing machine;
• Step 2 - The machine mixes the ingredients together until they form a dough, much like the consistency of Play-Dough;
• Step 3 - The dough goes through a machine that presses the dough until it is flat;
• Step 4 - The conversation words are applied to the dough and are then cut out of the dough in heart shapes. The candy drops onto a conveyor belt;
• Step 5 - The hearts take a 30-minute ride through a drying tunnel;
• Step 6 - The six different flavors are mixed together; and
• Step 7 - the Conversation Hearts are bagged, boxed, and ready to eat.

In 2006, NECCO added a preposition and conjunction to its mix of sayings so that sweet sentiments might be spelled out more grammatically. NECCO has attempted, over the years, to include sentiments inline with the current culture. The candies come in 2 sizes - small and large. The small heart has room for approximately two words of four letters each while the larger hearts can contain two words of five letters each.

Whatever their size or sayings, Conversation Hearts are and will be timeless.

Children bring joy to holidays like Easter, with their beautiful suits and dresses and colorful egg hunts on green lawns. But in addition to special outfits and candy peeps, what else can parents do to provide their kids with a meaningful Easter? Here are seven ways to go beyond the Easter bunny and communicate a positive message to your toddler:

1. Deliver an Easter basket to a friend in need. Do you know a child whose parent is deployed? Or maybe a single mom who has three young children? Think of a family you know that could use a little encouragement. Make an Easter basket for that family and deliver it with your toddler. Your son or daughter will learn the joy of giving firsthand as he or she gives away that thoughtful basket.

2. Buy candy and deliver it for a church or community Easter egg hunt. You can explain to your toddler that candy doesn't just magically appear at the egg hunts. People have to donate it first. Talk to them about the joy of giving and let them have their own special egg filled with a treat for helping out.

3. Visit a senior citizen at a nearby nursing home. Have your child color an Easter coloring page and deliver it to a resident. Call ahead of time and ask the activity director if there's a particular resident he or she would recommend. Ask for the best times to come and the appropriate protocol for bringing children. Your adorable child will be the highlight of the day for that senior citizen!

4. Have an "empty tomb" egg hunt. Hide eggs in your backyard or wherever would work for a hunt. Fill the eggs with stickers, quarters, small toys or candy. Leave one egg empty. Whoever finds the empty egg is the grand prize winner. Explain how Easter is the celebration of the empty tomb because Jesus rose from the grave on the third day. The grave was empty just like that egg. Give the child who found the empty egg a great prize like a dollar bill, larger toy, or scoop of ice cream.

5. Print out Easter coloring pages. Look on the internet for free coloring pages of Jesus on the cross and other Easter images. Tell your child how much God loves him and how special he is.

6. Attend an Easter service. Whether you go to church regularly or not, Easter is a great time to participate in a holiday celebration. Many churches offer fantastic programs for kids, from giant Easter egg hunts to musical specials.

7. Make something special for the host of your Easter dinner. If you are going to grandma's house for dinner, have your toddler make her a special card or craft to say thank you. Your host will be touched by your little one's thoughtfulness. And if you're the host, your child can make something small for each of your guests. Favors could be a coloring page, popsicle sticks glued together to make a cross, or plastic eggs filled with an after dinner mint.

When you take a little time to be intentional about Easter with your kids, you will find the holiday will become more meaningful not only to them, but to you!

Customer Review: So happy with this costume. Small is AGE 3-4 (not 4-6)
This is a great costume. Especially for a preschooler! The sizing is confusing though. Small 4-6 means size 4-6 not age 4-6. On the costume package it says size 4-6 for AGE 3-4. The same would logically apply to the larger sizes, so be careful to order the right size. I knew this before hand and the small fits my 4 year old ( a small 4 year old) great! The belt is velcro, one size, way too big but that is no problem. I just tie it like a sash in the back, a safety pin would be another option. The bracelets and the tiara are great and they stay put. The tiara wraps around with elastic on the back so works like a charm. There is a little place for the lasso (it comes with a lightweight golden lasso) which also helps to keep the belt in place. And the robe is great. It's actually nice and long. It is really much cuter than it looks in the picture. Seems comfortable enough for everyday play. Very cool. We are very happy with this.
Customer Review: Great product although sizings are odd
The costume is very well constructed. Unlike many other Wonder Woman costumes it includes the lasso, cape, boots, wrist bands, and headbands. However, because of the sizing of the accessories we will have to make some alterations to it to get it to fit. My daughter is a small five year old. The size small bodysuit barely fits her although we do expect to get some enjoyment out of it. It is quite stretchy after all. The cape barely reachs around her neck to fasten. I'll have to add some new ties so that it doesn't feel like it is choking her. The waist band and boots, on the other hand, are quite large. I'll have to add velcro to the waist band to make it fit smaller around her waist. I'm not sure what to do about the boots. They are sliding down her little legs. This costume is great for the price, just be aware when you buy it that there is some incongruity with the sizing of the accessories. If you are handy you should be able to make the adjustments yourself. It is a super price!
